Where the heck is Escanaba, Michigan?
Escanaba is a city in Delta County, in the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Located on the picturesque shoreline of the Little Bay de Noc of Lake Michigan, Escanaba is a year-round playground with a colorful history. Founded in 1863, Escanaba is named for the Escanaba River that flows into the Little Bay de Noc of Lake Michigan just north of the city. The word "Escanaba" roughly translates from various regional native languages to "land of the red buck" although some people maintain that it refers to "flat rock". More info can be found here. |
How did you find all these cards?
A very small number of cards were purchased in antique shops and shows in and around Escanaba and the Upper Peninsula. The vast majority were purchased online. The trouble with collecting Escanaba postcards is that most were mailed from Escanaba, usually to folks throughout the midwest but sometimes even farther away. So all these great cards started out in the same place but ended up scattered across the country. We imagine they were dealt with in a fairly customary manner: some went straight into the trash (gasp!), some were saved in albums, and a good number probably ended up stuffed into shoe boxes and stuck in the attic or basement. Years go by and eventually the shoe boxes are opened up (often at estate auctions) and the cards end up online.
How do I view the back of a card?
As much fun as the obverse (front) of each card is to look at, the reverse (back) of the cards are sometimes the real prize. The simple messages often speak volumes about the sender, the recipient, and the time in which they were sent. Many of our cards include an image of the reverse; for these cards, the postmark date will appear as a clickable link. In most cases, cards that are not postmarked will not include an image of the reverse.
What if I have additional and/or conflicting information regarding one of your exhibits?
We take history very seriously at Escanaba Postcard Museum. If you believe some of our facts are incorrect, or if you have additional information you think should be shared regarding a particular exhibit, please don't hesitate to let us know. Thanks!
I have an old Escanaba postcard. Is there a way I can donate or sell it to the museum?
Absolutely! Send a scan of the card, along with an asking price if you're looking to sell, and we will let you know one way or the other.
Can I download your postcard images and use them for myself?
Yes, but certain rules apply. Please check out our Download Requests page for more info.
Are any of your postcards for sale?
Sorry; none of the postcards on display at Escanaba Postcard Museum are for sale.
